# Do I need to trim my wheel studs to install spacers or adapters?
## Stud trimming is needed when your vehicle's studs are longer than the bolt-on spacer or adapter you're installing. All stud trimming should be handled professionally in a shop.
It depends on the length of your studs and the thickness of your spacer or adapter. Stud trimming is necessary when your vehicle's studs are longer than the bolt-on style spacer or adapter you are installing, since the extra length can hit the backside of the wheel.

**When will I need to trim my studs?**
- Most domestic trucks have 1.75 inch long studs, and cars typically have 1.25 to 1.50 inch long studs.
- More often than not, you will need to trim the studs if the spacer is 0.75 to 1.5 inches thick.
- Some wheels have pockets on the backside where the excess stud length can fit, which may avoid the need to trim.
**What about two-piece adapters?**
With two-piece adapters, the studs need to be trimmed shorter than the thickness of the first piece so they don't get in the way of installing the second piece. The first piece is usually about 1 inch thick, and the second piece bolts on top of it.
